July Fishing Report

** JULY FLY FISHING REPORT
———————————————————–
To all who’ve recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!
Summer is here, and we are targeting the warm water species with good results in Texas. Trout fishing in Colorado has been amazing. A good portion of Colorado is experiencing low water conditions, but the lower Gunnison river will have plenty of water through the summer. Check out https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=9e3871c814&e=113d00b1e2 to book a trip (https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=520699c16a&e=113d00b1e2) , buy some gear (https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=a24e723c4f&e=113d00b1e2) or gift certificate (https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=25ee66c288&e=113d00b1e2) , or get up to speed on the latest river info.

RIVER CONDITIONS
The water temperatures on the Guadalupe are too warm to target trout. The flows on the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake are 75 CFS. This is the time to enjoy all the warm water species the Texas Hill Country has to offer. Many great fishing stories of bass biting on poppers and streamers. The Canyon Lake level is a few feet low and flows could reduce more if rainfall doesn’t increase. It’s very important to keep a watch on the river flows. Wading can become dangerous if you are on the river when the dam suddenly increases its flow. We recommend visiting https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=2dd6da327d&e=113d00b1e2 to stay informed of the lake level and dam release. Make sure to book a trip (https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=1752aad72a&e=113d00b1e2) soon to secure your date.

Flows on the lower Gunnison river in Colorado are above 600 CFS, and should remain that way through the summer. This means plenty of cold water with great hatches. Hoppers, Caddis, and Stone Fly nymphs are a few of the long list of flies currently working. The upper Gunnison river is also fishing well with great Caddis hatches. There are some great trout opportunities on the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers as well.
Please contact us if you want to experience some great Colorado or Hill Country fly fishing. Guided trips and gift certificates can be purchased online at https://actionangler.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f77c2fc981da1f0c3e323af1a&id=c17916abe4&e=113d00b1e2 by clicking the “BOOK NOW” button.

Svend’s Cray Cray Fly

Fly of the Month – Svend’s Cray Cray

Links will take you to a video of how to tie this fly along with a list of materials.

J. Stockard Pro Tyer: Erik Svendsen, Provo, UT

You can find Erik @ instagram.com/svenddiesel/ and facebook.com/svend.diesel.9

If you love fishing crayfish patterns this is a must have for your box. It is a combination of many patterns I have tied and tested over the years and finally love the way this one fishes and is tied. There is nothing new about some of the things I have done with this Crayfish that make it different than others besides the 3 cones of hackle to create the head and minimize the arm fouling. Along with using the tab legs to create a shell, which isn’t new, but using the mono to not cut the tab legs and covering in a good resin makes this fly bullet proof to last many many fish piercings.

I cover the eye in UV resin because I am usually stripping and jigging this in through the rocks or shallows on a floating line. It can be simply dropped and jigged, the weight will place it in a defensive position and the arms being made of rabbit will naturally trap air causing them to rise making it vulnerable to any fish looking for a snack.

It is more time consuming than other Crayfish patterns I have fished, but this is way more effective and way more durable than others I have tied while also minimizing materials needed. I love this Black/Orange Magnum Rabbit strip color and also fish them in dark olives and crayfish orange.

I typically fish this from shore, casting at angles and stripping it across the rocks with quick strips and long pauses to allow it to rest in the defensive position with claws up. I also have cast it towards the banks from a float tube but try to strip parallel to the shoreline. I almost always fish it with floated line. Read more of this post
