Advanced Casting Class great for three members!!!

ADVANCED CASTING CLASS AT CYPRESS BEND

We covered a lot of territory in the advanced casting class on Saturday the 23rd of March.  Aerial mending, water mending, reach casts, shooting line, DOUBLE HAUL AND SINGLE HAUL and distance casting. Then we went to the River and did mending on the water, reach casts, and covered nymphing  and the stack mend which put you  in the feeding zone twice as long as a regular nymph cast.  Additionally we discussed streamer fishing and how to mend down stream to make the lure act like a minnow next to the bank on the far side.  It really makes a difference when you do these cast on the water instead of the grass.  Actual current in the river makes it much harder and you have to additionally learn line control and feeding line.  The small class allowed a lot of individual attention and I must say, at least one of our members can now DOUBLE HAUL.  The other 2 are on their way and will just take some practice and patience to get it going.  Thanks to those who showed up for this class!!!!

Tuesday Float on the Guadalupe by NBFF

On Tuesday we had and all day float from Rio to Rocky Beach.  We had 3 boats and 3 guides with the flows running at about 360cfs.  Lots of fish were caught using the standard 3 fly rig under and indicator.  Most of the bites were soft and barley moved the indicator.  Some of us caught some nice 16-18 rainbows and one good brown was caught.   Thanks to Ron DeMeyer for setting this up.  I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking!!

GETTING STARTED

ADVANCED CASTING WITH MIKE: SATURDAY MARCH 23RD AT CYPRESS BEND PARK

  • SATURDAY MARCH 23: Advanced Casting with Mike from 9-11:30 at the Cypress Bend Park. This class will focus on Ariel Mending, on the water mending, curve casts, slack line casts and accuracy and distance. One of the casts will show you how to double your time in the feeding zone when nymphing!!!!!!!!! Rods and reels are available if requested.Cost is free for NBFF members and $10 for non- members.  However, if you join the club that day by joining the IFF, the cost will be free.
  • You should wear waders or be prepared to wade, because all these casts and mends are best done on the water.  You can always do the casts from the bank, but will not get the same results as in the water.
  • We will meet at the parking lot opposite the covered area and go the to the field and river from there.

Fly Fishing Report

To all who’ve recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!

The fishing on the Guadalupe has been great, and is full of beautiful browns and rainbows. The river flows are currently at 347 CFS. These higher-than-normal flows will likely make for great trout fishing into June, and possibly summer. All of the trout stockings are complete, and the fish have adapted well to their new environment. Smaller Midge and BWO patterns have been the norm with challenging battles to keep the fish on.

The Canyon Lake level is full and the outflows will be be similar to the inflows. It’s very important to keep a watch on the river flows. Wading can become dangerous if you are on the river when the flows are suddenly increased from the dam. We recommend visiting http://www.grtu.org/flow/ to stay informed of lake level and dam release.

Anglers who are wading are benefiting from using wading staffs and having knowledge of the river from the low-water years. Longer leaders and heavier split-shot is needed for nymph rigs. Streamer anglers are using sink-tip lines or leaders to swing buggers of various colors.

This is our 17th trout season. We’ve seen high flows, low flows, and everything in between. Please contact us if you want to experience some great hill country fly fishing.

Don’t be intimidated by the skills needed to fish the higher flows. By booking a half-day trip or 2-hour lesson, we can provide the equipment needed and show you how to use it. This is a great way to break into the sport or improve skills.

I’d like to fill you in on the most recent news in the Texas Hill Country and west/central Colorado.
