DO NOT MISS CHRIS JOHNSON AT THE 27 FEBRUARY MEETING

FEATURING FISHING ON THE GUADALUPE

Chris Johnson has been fly fishing Central Texas for over 15 years and has spent countless hours scouting, researching, and fishing the rivers on which he now guides.  Chris grew up in Round Rock, Texas and cut his fly fishing teeth on the waters of Brushy Creek.  His home town had no fly shop, so after two years of guiding the area, Chris opened the doors to Round Rock’s first and only fly shop:  Living Waters Fly Fishing.  Living Waters is a full service fly shop that hosts Chris’ guide business and serves as a fly fishing education center to anglers of all ages.  Chris has guided over seven years and guides many hill country rivers including the Llano, San Gabriel, Colorado,

Soft Hackle Flys? What are they?

FYI,
Dan Cone used the term “Soft Hackle Fly” the other day when Jeff and I ran into him at Rio Raft and asked what the trout were hitting that day. He also used it in his most recent news letter update. We weren’t sure what exactly that referred to or if it was a particular fly (we’re still newbie’s you know). We knew what a hackle was and wondered if the term “soft hackle” was something different or unique to some types of flies. So I googled it and this is what came up. Anyway, attached is an article explaining the origin of the term “soft hackle”, what it is, and how it is used.

GREAT FISHING TRIP ON THE GUADALUPE RIVER IN JANUARY

WOW!!!!!!! What a great day the New Braunfels Fly Fishers had on the Guadalupe yesterday. Five warmly clothed flyfishers met at Whitewater at 7:45 AM to try their luck at the river. This group was led by our outing Director Ron DeMeyer and included Phil Lambrecht, Jeff O’Bera, Pat McQuinn and Mike Wright. I’ll let the pictures tell the story but notice the ice cycles in the second picture. Many great fish were caught and we ended the day with a great Hamberger at Jay and Diane’s Horseshoe Grill where members Gary Nyland and Dick Holte joined us for fish tales and food.
