February Fly Fishing Report

To all who’ve recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!

It has been a great season so far, and the best is still to come. The Guadalupe is seeing more anglers than usual. The additional stockings to come should make for some great fishing experiences into the summer. We are seeing a broad range of bug hatches this year that have been missing in the past. Everything from Midges, Caddis, PMD, Trico, BWO, Slate Drake, and Hexes are hatching. There have been moments where all the bugs are visible at the same time. These great bug events have made lots of food choices for the trout. A deep fly collection, and frequent fly change has been necessary to keep up with the bite. Many fly patterns and techniques are being used. Dries, nymphs, and streamers have all had success. The air temps have been consistently cold and more cold days in the forecast. This should make for a great setup for the summer with cold lake water out of Canyon Lake. February and March is a great time to book a trip to experience some epic fly fishing for trout. Check out http://actionangler.net/ to book a trip, buy some gear or gift certificate, or get up to speed on the latest river info.

RIVER CONDITIONS

The flows on the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake are 81 CFS. We are recommending half day float trips for trout because of the lack of water. Many great fishing stories of trout biting on dries, nymphs, and streamers. Flows below the dam could change at any time. It’s very important to keep a watch on the river flows. Wading can become dangerous if you are on the river when the dam suddenly increases its flow. We recommend visiting http://www.grtu.org/flow/ to stay informed of the lake level and dam release. Make sure to book a trip soon to secure your date.

FLY SHOP and RIVER ACCESS

The Action Angler fly shop and river access is open. For everyone’s safety, masks will be required to enter the fly shop, and the number of customers are limited to 4 at a time. The door to the shop will likely be locked in order to control the traffic inside the shop. Purchases can be made through our website at any time of the year.

We continue to have the most experienced guides on the river. Please let us know if there are any issues with booking trips online. Start planning now for bass trips in March, April, and May. Check out http://actionangler.net/ to book a trip, buy some gear or gift certificate, or get up to speed on the latest river info. (All of our guides have been vaccinated for COVID-19)

I’d like to fill you in on the most recent news in the Texas Hill Country and west/central Colorado.

Dan Cone called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

Pat McQuinn reported that we have 31 current members.

Ron said he would put together an outing on the Guadalupe River in mid-February, the fishing has been very good and February should be in full swing of things and even better.

Ron reported that Pat McQuinn and he had delivered the GRTU Youth Trout Camp gift bags to Dakus Geeslin on January 14th and they were much appreciated.  The president of GRTU, Bill Marshall, also expressed his appreciation.

GRTU Troutfest 22 will be held February 18 – 20 at L&L Campground. Ron will ask the core group that helped assemble our tent and performed other pre-game activities in past Troutfests to help with these chores once again.  Also, said he would put out an email to request NBFF members to sign-up to man the booth during Troutfest.  The club will raffle a fly box and flies again this year as a tool to generate interest in our club.  We will us a fly box left over from GRTU Trout Camp and a budget of $30.00 was approved to purchase the flies for the raffle.

A straw vote was taken to choose the subject of the presentation that Jim Gray will make at our February meeting.  Jim has several presentations and the group chose “Fly Fishing the Colorado River”.

Our speaker for the evening was Dylan Mendoza, Dylan Mendoza Fly Fishing, His subject was “Fly Fishing the Texas Coastal Bend”.  Dylan’s power point presentation was informative and entertaining.  He also brought examples of rods and flies needed to fish the coast.

Fishing is Good on the Guad

The fishing has really been good on the Guad, great luck on these colder rainy days for me. Girdle bugs, (pats jimmy legs) or woolly buggers or a Fox Squirrel followed with a prince nymph, hares ear or an emerger have been what I have been using. Though worms have done very well also.
